Magyarországon a modern negyedkor-kutatás, a klimatikus morfológiai irányzat megteremtője. Részletesen foglalkozott a Balaton kialakulásával, korával, a Balaton-vidék morfológiájával. Ezzel kapcsolatban több tanulmánya jelent meg. Az MTA levelező tagja volt.
