Első írásai az iskola évkönyveiben és a Kollégiumi Lapokban jelenek meg. A budapesti tudományegyetemen Eötvös-kollégistaként szerzett tanári oklevelet. Két évig, 1943–1945-ben Pápán tanított. Szentgál határnevei adtak indítékot doktori értekezéséhez (Földrajzi neveink élete) is. Az MTA Nyelvtudományi Intézetének tudományos munkatársa, 1954-től a Magyar Nyelvőr felelős szerkesztője. Ebben a munkában a veszprémi születésű Simonyi Zsigmond utóda. 1952-től az Édes Anyanyelvünk műsor szerkesztője a rádióban, 1979 után a szerkesztőbizottság elnöke. 1963-tól hasonló műsora volt a televízióban is. Előadásainak nagy szerepe volt a nyelvi műveltség és az anyanyelvi ismeretek terjesztésében. Felbecsülhetetlen értékű az a munka, amelyet a Magyarok Világszövetségében az anyanyelvi konferenciák szervezésével, a határon kívül élő magyarok összefogásáért, nemzettudatuk ápolásáért, nyelvi ízlésük nemesítéséért végzett. Szentgálon az általános iskola falán emléktábla, a lépcsőházban bronz dombormű, Domokos Béla alkotása őrzi emlékét. Munkássága elismeréseként 1970-ben Állami-díjat, 1981-ben Apáczai-díjat, 1992-ben Pais Dezső-díjat, 1992-ben Kosztolányi-díjat kapott.<br /> <br /> ==Művei==<br /> <br /> *Földrajzi neveink élete.
